U.S. Citizenship / Dual Citizenship
Dual Citizenship for Germans and Austrians:
If you are a German or Austrian citizen and plan to obtain U.S. citizenship or another country’s citizenship, it’s important to understand the current legal differences.
For Germans: As of June 27, 2024, Germany no longer requires a citizenship retention permit (Beibehaltungsgenehmigung). This means German citizens can now acquire another citizenship, such as U.S. citizenship, without losing their German nationality.
For Austrians: Austrian citizens, however, must still apply for a retention permit before becoming a citizen of another country. Without this permit, Austrian citizenship is automatically lost upon acquiring a new nationality. The Beibehaltungsgenehmigung must be approved in advance by Austrian authorities.
